Whale Sharks & Sea Lions

La Paz is a unique destination, one of the few places in the world where it's possible to swim with whale sharks and sea lions in the same day. There are two different options for this experience, whale sharks swimming in the morning followed by a visit to either the Los Islotes sea lion colony on Isla Partida or the San Rafaelito sea lion colony located just outside the harbor of La Paz.

Both tours are eight hours in duration and include

  • Wet-suits and snorkeling equipment
  • Lunch (vegetarian/vegan options), juices and water, snacks and fresh fruits.
  • In-water guide (Spanish/English)

Whale Shark swimming & Los Islotes sea lion colony tour

With a round-trip of over 100km this tour will transport you from the harbor of La Paz to the northernmost point of the Isla Espiritu biosphere reserve, Los Islotes. Before embarking to the islands you will first visit El Mogote, the sandy peninsula famous for it's whale sharks. Here you will swim with the largest fish on earth, reaching lengths of up to 12m/40ft. The whale sharks return to La Paz every year to feed on plankton blooms that occur in the shallow waters of the bay. These blooms attract a large number of whale sharks and it is very common for us to swim with multiple individuals during the tour. The tour includes education about the whale shark and local conservation efforts, your guide will also accompany you into the water and show you the best way to approach and view these magnificent animals. Most of the whale sharks that visit La Paz are young adults and juveniles, reaching lengths of 10m/33ft. Large but completely harmless the whale sharks are an amazing experience for all ages.

After the whale shark portion of the tour we will head out to Los Islotes, approximately a 1 1/2 hr boat ride. On the way there is the chance to see sea turtles, mobula and manta rays, large fish such as marlin and tuna and humpback whales during the whale watching season. Once we reach the sea lion colony of Los Islotes you will enter the water with your guide and experience one of the most fun things ever, swimming with sea lions. This particular colony is famous because of the large number of juvenile sea lions who have no reservations about interacting with humans. After our time with the sea lions we will begin our journey back to La Paz, stopping for a quick picnic lunch on one of the island's beautiful beaches. Late afternoon is also the best time to spot the jumping mobula rays, a local phenomenon here in La Paz.

Whale Shark swimming & San Rafaelito sea lion colony tour

San Rafaelito is a small island located close to Balandra Bay, home of the famous mushroom rock. It's home to about 30-40 sea lions, mostly young and full grown adults. While the sea lions here are not as playful as those at Los Islotes the area is much closer to the harbor and allows for more time to be spent with both the whale sharks and the sea lions. San Rafaelito is an excellent snorkeling spot with one of the largest coral reefs we have here in La Paz. The reef is very healthy with a large population of fish and sightings of Mobula rays are common. After swimming with the sea lions you will visit Balandra Bay and enjoy a picnic lunch on one of the beautiful beaches in the Bay.
